September is National Preparedness Month. It's all about doing a little planning now so you will be better prepared for emergencies or the unexpected later.
With all that's going on now - from hurricanes in the Gulf and wildfires in California to COVID-19 everywhere - you might be thinking...life is nothing but unexpected emergencies! But it's never too late to make a plan, and it's always a good time to prepare. Prepared, not scared. Even if your life has taken some twists and turns lately, sitting down to assess your situation, set some goals and make a plan can help you feel more in control and less stressed. Visit the Ready.gov website for some easy to follow steps and lists that will help you make a plan and build an emergency kit. It also provides advice for what you should include in your financial emergency kit, such as copies (or digital images) of your important documents and a stash of cash. As part of National Preparedness Month, on September 17, we will have John Silmon, a financial advisor from Edward Jones in Schaumburg, as our Money Smart Meetup guest presenter. He will be talking about "Ready or Not: Preparing for the Unexpected." This will be a virtual program on Zoom. |
